Shelia Evans-Tranumn

Shelia Evans-Tranumn joined the Casey Family Programs board of trustees in 2003 with 30 years of experience in the education sector. This includes 16 years as a junior and senior high school English teacher and assistant principal in New York City. Evans-Tranumn also served four years as director of Auxiliary Services for High Schools in New York, the largest alternative high school program in the country.

She is the associate commissioner of education for the New York State Education Department—Office of New York City School and Community Services. Her responsibilities include providing direction and coordination of the state education services and technical assistance to the New York City school districts and the New York City education community. She also works with interdisciplinary teams to implement school reform initiatives throughout New York State, something she’s been actively involved in for the past ten years.

Evans-Tranumn serves on numerous boards and commissions that address education, race, and gender issues. She has received more than 25 awards recognizing her contributions. Shelia is a Ph.D. candidate in English education at New York University. She earned her master’s in English education at Long Island University and her bachelor’s in English at North Carolina Central University.
