Sacramento, CA — Sacramento Theatre Company (STC), the 65-year-old professional regional playhouse, will partner with the national operating foundation, Casey Family Programs, to bring Regina Louise’s one-woman world premiere, Someone’s Somebody, to Sacramento. The show opens May 2 on STC’s Mainstage.
Louise, who as a child in foster care lived in more than thirty different placements, is now an author, motivational speaker and children’s advocate. She will share her powerful story of self-determination, resilience and redemptive love on stage for the first time. “Love is never wasted,” said Louise who is also a spokesperson for National Foster Care Month. “My story is about the possibilities that can be achieved in life given the smallest shred of love and the need every child has for a permanent lifelong connection – or to be someone’s somebody.”
Someone’s Somebody, based on Louise’s bestselling memoir Somebody’s Someone, will open in conjunction with the California kick-off of National Foster Care Month, scheduled for May 1 – 5, 2007. Ms. Louise will also offer the keynote address at the kick-off rally at the State Capitol May 1st at 11:00 a.m. “We are delighted to sponsor this special play, which offers a powerful message about the critical need that every child in foster care has for nurturing lifelong connections to a caring family or adult,” said Miryam Choca, Director, California Strategies for Casey Family Programs. Casey, which leads the National Foster Care Month effort, works to improve the lives of children, youth and families involved in the foster care system both nationally and in California.
There are nearly 80,000 youth in foster care in California today, with 4,600 living in Sacramento County. Each year, more than 4,000 youth “age out” of the child welfare system in California at age 18, often without a connection to a family or caring adult. These young people face daunting odds, including high rates of school drop-out, homelessness, mental health issues and unemployment. In Sacramento County today and throughout California, child welfare administrators and partner organizations are implementing innovative practices and family finding technology to ensure that foster youth make permanent lifelong connections with an adult, family and community before they age out of care.
