How do Casey Family Programs’ young people experience foster care? How do they fare after they leave care? How do they compare to other former foster youth and to their peers who have never experienced foster care?
Answers to these questions lie with the young adults who have received services from Casey. The Casey Young Adult Survey examined their quality of life in several key areas:
- Mental health
- Education
- Employment and financial situation
- Life skills
- Living situation
- Physical health and substance abuse
- Sexual orientation, relationships, and social support
- Criminal justice involvement
The survey found that some young adults are thriving. Many are struggling. It confirms the focus of Casey’s 2020 Vision.
Even in the best foster care, youth may experience more trauma than their peers outside of care. As a result, they may require better mental health services. More challenges can arise as they pursue their education. And some young people may be less prepared to get and keep a job. This report includes several ways to improve services in these areas.
