Fact Sheet: Latino
Children in Child
Welfare (2009).
Seattle: Casey Family
Programs.

Current demographic data reveals that Latinos are the largest and fastest growing ethnic group in the nation. Latinos represented 49% of the nation’s growth from 2004 to 2005.

The number of Latino children in foster care more than doubled from 6.7 percent of the foster care population in 1982 to 19 percent in 2006.

With these changes comes the need for the child welfare systems and community based organizations to provide services that are culturally and linguistically sensitive to the needs of this growing Latino population.

This fact sheet provides a national, data-based context about the unique needs and strengths of the growing population of Latino children who are served by the child welfare system.
