Casey Family Programs is committed to working with low-income families who may lack access to traditional support programs. To better understand the perspective of families and to build on existing programs, Casey staff conducted focus groups in 16 cities across the country. More than 500 parents participated.
Parents’ input, research analysis, and discussions with community service providers resulted in three areas for parent development: leadership, advocacy, and financial management. Casey also worked with Columbia University’s National Center for Children in Poverty to research evidence-based promising practices and curricula for these three areas.
The Powerful Families program provides free, fun workshops that train parents and caregivers to lead, manage money, and advocate for their families and each other. Casey provides these workshops in partnership with community, civic, and faith-based organizations in seven regional locations. Results from the program’s pilot phase in spring 2004 show significant, positive outcomes.
