In his address this month to the Birmingham (Ala.) Rotary, Casey Family Programs President and CEO Dr. William C. Bell said that what happens to Birmingham\u2019s vulnerable children and families in the next 15 years will be determined by how the public defines \u201cours\u201d and whether change occurs in the city\u2019s 28 ZIP codes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \n \n \n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

How we define \u2018our,\u2019 as in our children, our home, our extended family, our neighbors, our ZIP code, our state, our nation, makes a difference and will dictate how we respond to vulnerable children and families.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cHow we define \u2018our,\u2019 as in our children, our home, our extended family, our neighbors, our ZIP code, our state, our nation, makes a difference and will dictate how we respond to vulnerable children and families,\u201d Bell said.<\/p>\n

\u201cTwo questions that will influence the destiny of children are: \u2018How are the children?\u2019 and \u2018What are we going to do about it?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

To frame these questions, Bell asked the audience to consider what any particular data point says about a specific child and the likelihood of something happening in a child\u2019s life. Does the neighborhood have a lack of services? Of supermarkets? Of parks?<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do the data say about a child\u2019s future possibilities?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

He encouraged the audience to think about what the data tells them and to accept the challenge that what children experience is not distributed equally throughout Birmingham.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cData will tell you where you\u2019ve been, where you are now and where you have an opportunity to go,\u201d Bell said. He added a ZIP code-specific strategy could target help where the data says it needs to go.<\/p>\n

To create the change necessary that will help vulnerable children and families improve their lives, Bell said we must have:<\/p>\n
