Bell as the 2014 James A. Joseph Lecturer, an award that honors philanthropic leadership in support of Black communities.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->In naming Dr. Bell as this year\u2019s winner, ABFE leaders said the aim was to acknowledge \u201can outstanding individual whose visionary leadership and stewardship of progressive philanthropic ideals advance ABFE\u2019s mission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->Founded in 1971 as the first established affinity group of the Council on Foundations, ABFE partners with foundations, nonprofits and individuals and provides members with professional development and technical assistance to advance the philanthropic sector\u2019s responsiveness to issues of equality, diversity and inclusion. The organization has been credited with many of philanthropy\u2019s early gains in diversity and racial inclusion.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->The James A. Joseph Lecturer Award was started in 1991 in honor of Ambassador James A. Joseph, the former U.S. ambassador to South Africa. The lecture and awards ceremony serves as the centerpiece of ABFE\u2019s annual conference.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->In a letter to Bell, ABFE President &amp; CEO Susan Taylor Batten noted that a focus on family and community is a hallmark of Bell\u2019s leadership at Casey Family Programs.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->\u201cYour leadership in the field on issues facing Black youth and communities is deserving of recognition,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->Dr. Bell said he was honored to receive the award. \u201cOver the past 43 years, ABFE has been a strong and consistent voice on the need for philanthropy to challenge itself on the way it has addressed the needs of the Black community,\u201d Bell said.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->\u201cBecause of ABFE&#8217;s efforts there have been significant advancements in the presence of people of color in philanthropic leadership. Equally as important, because of ABFE we are all more engaged in confronting the complex issues impacting responsive philanthropic investments in Black communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph -->In his keynote address, Bell cited the <a href=\"https:\/\/schottfoundation.org\/our-work\/executive-alliance-boys-men-color\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Executives&#8217; Alliance<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/obamawhitehouse.archives.gov\/my-brothers-keeper\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">My Brother&#8217;s Keeper<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wkkf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kellogg Foundation<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skillman.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Skillman Foundation<\/a> as positive examples leading the way in partnerships with government and philanthropy.
