The team also engages with the community to prevent families from entering the foster care system. This helps to define who they are and where they came from. Sometimes, just going back to the community brings back memories about their family and the culture they grew up in. \u2026 It also helps the social worker develop a better understanding of the youth.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n  <figcaption class=\"text-md text-right mt-9 font-sofiapro\"><cite>&mdash; Staff person, San Antonio Field Office, Casey Family Programs<\/cite><\/figcaption>\n  <\/div>\n\n  <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n<div class=\"content-section light fresh-text single wp-block-fresh-text backgrounds-and-margins-aware-block margin-top margin-bottom\">\n <div class=\"container mx-auto px-5\">\n\n \n   <h2>Why the Community Opportunity Map<\/h2>\n  \n <!-- The CTA is moved up next to the title when in the Head Section style -->\n \n  <div class=\"callout\"><p><!-- wp:paragraph -->Casey Family Programs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casey.org\/community-opportunity-map\/\">Community Opportunity Map<\/a> allows anyone to find child and family well-being data for any neighborhood across this nation to analyze, plan, and act alongside others to build Communities of Hope. The Community Opportunity Map has 30 indicators across five topic areas: child and family well-being, education, economy, housing, and accessibility (of food, internet, and transportation). The tool uses data from the U.S. Census Bureau\u2019s American Community Survey and several other sources, covering states, counties, Congressional districts, cities, and ZIP codes in all 50 states as well as the municipios of Puerto Rico. Two-thirds of the indicators can be disaggregated by race and ethnicity. Then, they created their own process to explore the communities where the families they serve reside. The process included these steps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Staff paired up and researched their own communities and shared stories that aligned with the data.<\/li>\n<li>Staff created a physical map of San Antonio, located in their conference room, and placed pins where the families they serve live.<\/li>\n<li>Staff used the Community Opportunity Map to better understand the neighborhoods where their families live.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n \n \n <!-- conversly to above, we need to not show the CTA here if it's the Head Section style -->\n  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"content-section light fresh-text single wp-block-fresh-text backgrounds-and-margins-aware-block margin-top margin-bottom\">\n <div class=\"container mx-auto px-5\">\n\n \n   <h2>Staff engage families and community resources differently<\/h2>\n  \n <!-- The CTA is moved up next to the title when in the Head Section style -->\n \n  <div class=\"callout\"><p><!-- wp:paragraph -->As a result of this innovative approach to using the Community Opportunity Map, staff engaged with families differently and understood resources in a novel way. For example:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\u00a0Staff could relate to families more effectively by being more aware of conditions in their communities.<\/li>\n<li>Staff were able to pinpoint resources closer to where the family lived. This helps reduce travel time for the family and provides a more sustainable family resource.<\/li>\n<li>Staff were able to maintain or re-establish a connection between youth and their family, culture and community.<\/li>\n<li>The Field Office created an eco-map of resources available where their families live and established relationships with those resources where none existed (see image).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n \n \n <!-- conversly to above, we need to not show the CTA here if it's the Head Section style -->\n  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"content-section light fresh-text single wp-block-fresh-text backgrounds-and-margins-aware-block margin-top margin-bottom\">\n <div class=\"container mx-auto px-5\">\n\n \n   <h2>A commitment to hope through data<\/h2>\n  \n <!-- The CTA is moved up next to the title when in the Head Section style -->\n \n  <div class=\"callout\"><p>The pandemic created many challenges for effectively serving youth, families, and communities, and the Field Office\u2019s work with the Community Opportunity Map was largely put on hold. Staff intend to re-engage and evolve their innovative work.
