In this video, former foster youth share their stories about their experiences in care and how society often perceives them.

“Everyone thinks that we’re such bad people,” says Dawna Hovenier. “We are not bad people, we just had terrible circumstances in which we were brought up.”

Hovenier was among 65 young people who traveled to Washington, D.C., in May 2015 to share their experiences with their congressional representatives.

Trayvonna Tucker-Bayne also was part of the trip.

“My time in foster care is gone and past, I’m 25, but still, to give my story, and to be an advocate for those who are facing it today, it meant a lot to me,” she says.
