The Community Opportunity Map

At Casey Family Programs, we work in support of a range of partners, including the children and families we serve each day, to promote a shared responsibility for ensuring the well-being of every child and family across the nation. We believe that every community can create hope and opportunities for its children and families.

The Community Opportunity Map is an interactive tool that highlights the aspects of communities that are associated with safe children and strong families. This interactive, research-based framework is composed of select community indicators and is available for any community in the nation to use. Most indicators are pulled from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. It was informed by significant evidence of the community factors correlated with child maltreatment and a healthy community framework developed by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The interactive tool maps community indicators at geographic levels defined by the user, from the state level down to neighborhoods, many of which can be disaggregated by race and ethnicity. The most recent version of the Community Opportunity Map provides data for Puerto Rico and includes several new indicators (e.g., preschool enrollment, home ownership rate).
